Would you like to join the band?
The band welcomes new woodwind, brass or percussion players where they are able to read and play music at a reasonable standard and are able to play as part of an ensemble.
We play a wide range of music from classical to pop.
That does not mean you have to be an expert player though and we can accommodate most levels of ability. If you are not sure whether you can play at the level required then speak to us as you may still be able to fit in and tuition is also available. Part of our mission is to encourage people into music and develop their skill irrespective of their current level and we have pathways available to facilitate this from very early stages. Please contact us and one of our music educators will discuss how we can help you.

Here are answers to some common questions about joining us:
1. I play a brass or woodwind instrument already (or percussion) and can read music
Yes - you can probably join us. Email us and tell us about yourself.
We are particularly keen to encourage younger people who have perhaps just left the school system as a player and would like to keep playing - many give up at this stage through lack of opportunity to continue - we can provide that opportunity for you!
2. I used to play but haven’t done for a long time but would like to get back to it
Depending on what level you played at you may either be able to come straight in and probably pick it up again in a week or two or else you might need a little bit of a refresher with some lessons. We have access to some excellent tuition available through the band and if you need it we can put you in touch with an appropriate individual to discuss your individual requirements
3. I can read music and play another instrument such as piano or violin but want to learn a woodwind instrument or percussion
This is potentially much easier than starting from scratch as you will already have the rudiments and theory of music. Talking to one of our music teachers in the band is probably the best way to proceed as they will be able to offer individual guidance based on your experience.
4. I can’t play an instrument or read music but want to learn
You will need to undertake some lessons on your instrument of choice and get to a level of ability where you are able to integrate with the band. We have experienced and professional individuals in the band who can offer guidance on this matter. Realistically though you can expect to have to attend regular lessons and practice for about 2 or 3 years before you will be at a stage where you would be able to join us.
5. I can play but don’t have an instrument
Through the support of North Ayrshire Council, the band has the facility to loan instruments to those who need one.
6. Are we looking for any instruments/players in particular?
The band currently is quite well balanced so we can probably accept any woodwind or brass player. It is, however, possible that we may ask you to consider a different instrument of the same family you already play just to help maintain that balance. Some people are not keen to do this (which is totally fine with us) and others enjoy the challenge of something a little different.
Currently an additional tuba/bass player and a timpanist or percussionist would be particularly welcome!
7. I would like to join but have a disability/cannot travel there/English is not my first language or have another issue I think may prevent me from coming.
The GVCCB is fully inclusive and where we possibly and reasonably can we will provide additional support for anyone who needs it in order they can to enjoy playing music with us. As this is a very wide-ranging topic the best thing to do is to send us an email (which will be in treated with the strictest confidence) and we can discuss your individual situation with you.
8. Is there an age limit?
Yes you must be over 12 to attend and we have the appropriate legal checks and controls in place for working with young people. There is no upper age limit.
9. Is there a cost?
Unfortunately yes - there is a subscription which can be paid annually or monthly. We try and keep this as low as possible but we do need to cover the cost of hall lets, insurance and paying the Director of Music etc. Where an individual is unable to meet this requirement assistance may be available in the form of reduced subscriptions or other support.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us in fullest confidence.
